Meet Andy Richardson: The Driving Force Behind Free Speakers Chicago

Andy Richardson, Executive Director of Free Speakers, a pro bono speakers bureau.

As the Executive Director of Free Speakers, a pro bono speakers bureau, one of the most frequent questions I encounter is, “How do you make money doing this?” It’s a valid inquiry, and one that often leads to a broader discussion about motivation, community service, and the values that guide my endeavors. The simple answer is, we don’t make money directly from Free Speakers. It’s a passion project, a way for me to give back, and frankly, I sometimes wonder why the impulse to contribute to one’s community is met with such persistent curiosity about financial gain.

Just as many individuals dedicate their time to worthy causes through organizations like the Rotary Club, various service clubs, churches, schools, and charities, Free Speakers is my chosen avenue for community engagement. I find it somewhat perplexing that the focus often shifts to financial incentives rather than the inherent desire to contribute. Volunteering is a cornerstone of a thriving society, and the myriad ways people choose to give back should be celebrated.

For me, the motivation is intrinsic. I firmly believe in the transformative power of public speaking and the dissemination of knowledge. A well-delivered presentation can inspire, educate, and spark meaningful change within individuals and organizations. Free Speakers acts as a bridge, connecting those with valuable expertise to share with groups eager to learn and grow.

While there’s no monetary reward, the feedback I receive fuels my dedication and reinforces the value of Free Speakers. I regularly hear from speakers who are thrilled to have a platform to share their passions and knowledge with appreciative audiences. Their enthusiasm and positive impact are very rewarding to witness.

Equally gratifying are the messages from organizations and community groups who express their relief and gratitude for finding Free Speakers. They often share stories of struggling to locate knowledgeable experts willing to speak to their members or attendees on a pro bono basis. Knowing that Free Speakers has filled this crucial gap and made valuable resources accessible is a powerful motivator.

Ultimately, my involvement with Free Speakers stems from a deep-seated desire to serve my community. It’s about leveraging my skills and network to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and empower organizations with access to expertise they might otherwise lack. While the question of how I “make money” persists, the true reward lies in the positive impact Free Speakers has on both the speakers and the audiences they reach. It’s my way of contributing, my form of service, and a testament to the enduring power of giving back.
